A little over a week ago, I took my Grandma and my mum out for afternoon tea at the Fairmont Palliser hotel, to celebrate my Grandma's 85th birthday. The Palliser, they do afternoon tea right. Served between two and four in the afternoon, every day of the week except for Sundays, it's definitely a treat to go, and it's a very fun thing to do with one's grandmother!
First, you choose the tea that you'd like to have, and they have a nice list to choose from. The three of us all went for the Empress afternoon tea blend, which is special for the Empress hotel in Vancouver. With your tea, they have cream, white sugar and brown rock sugar, honey in tiny pots, stir sticks that have crystallized sugar on them and lemons. And that's just for the tea! For our meal, first our server brought out a fruit salad, drizzled with a bit of simple syrup. Then for the main course. Four different types of sandwiches: cream cheese and smoke salmon pinwheels, roast beef with horseradish mayo, chicken salad with tart apple and red grapes, and cucumber triangles. They were all fantastic. We also each had a scone, served with clotted cream, apple-cranberry jam, and peach jam. To finish, a selection of sweets: chocolate covered strawberries, lemon tarts, and two different kinds of cookies.
I was stuffed when I finished, and had planned ahead by having a larger breakfast and skipping lunch. I also only needed a tiny dinner. A very nice time was had by all, and I hope to make it a tradition!
